Health Plan Benchmarking Regional Findings: How Does Your Plan Compare?

The benefits landscape remains in a state of flux as the cost of health care continues to increase and recruitment and retention of quality employees becomes more competitive.  Combined with the potential impact from Health Care Reform legislation, employers are increasingly challenged to find accurate information that will help them evaluate their health plan design, comply with new regulations and strategically manage rising costs to remain competitive in their market.  The United Benefit Advisors (UBA) Health Plan Benchmarking Survey, the largest Health Plan Benchmarking Survey in the country, provides employers with valuable information about how their plan compares to their peers in categories such as industry, region and size.  If you would like a detailed benchmarking report, customized to your organization, please click here.

Here are some key regional trends taken from the 2013 Health Plan Benchmarking survey:

  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans continue to be the dominant plan type offered to employees nationally, with approximately 47.2% of all employees enrolled in this plan type, which is 4.7% more than are enrolled in Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Consumer-Driven Health Plans (CDHPs) combined.
  • CDHP plans are far more prevalent, however, in the Northeast where 28.8% of employees are enrolled in this plan type, compared to the Western region where only 15.1% of employees are in a CDHP and 29.9% are enrolled in an HMO.
  • Total Annual Cost Per Employee varies greatly across the U.S.  For example, in the Northeast, an employer’s total annual cost for a single employee is $10,808; in the Southeast it is $7,846.
