Recently, Innovative had the pleasure of seeing Frank Abagnale speak at the UBA Conference in Chicago. You may recognize Frank’s name from the movie “Catch Me If You Can” where he was played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Frank became (in)famous for writing fake checks (among other things) as a teenager. Later in life, he was offered an opportunity to work for the FBI and still works there today in their fraud division. Frank shared some important insights to consider about protecting your identity. Below are a few of Frank’s top tips:
- Everyone in America should assume that their information has been compromised and should take appropriate action to protect themselves. Frank himself has had a monitoring service since the early 1980’s and advises everyone to have one.
- Criminals often do not use people’s information from a breach for 3-5 years. They know that the corporation who has been breached is often providing one year of free monitoring and that people are vigilant for the months following the breach. It is when you least expect it that they will start using your information.
- Individuals should reconsider the use of debit cards. When your debit card becomes compromised, it is your bank account and subsequently your money which is stolen. When it is a credit card, it is their money that is stolen!
